Oils & Acrylics

I began painting in oils in 2020 when I was asked to do a solo show with my watercolors. I'd had a tickle to try this new medium because of it's intensity of colors and the ability to be more responsive to changes during the painting process. Whereas watercolor requires a lot of planning prior before starting painting because once watercolor is on the paper is isn't easy to go from dark to light, oil can change values easily. Acrylics are much like oils, except they dry faster...sometimes a benefit, but sometimes not. Oils can take up to 4 months to really cure, whereas acrylics as dry within hours and therefore require different techniques and pacing in the creation of a painting.

Southwest Rocks

I'm fascinated with the colors in the rock formation and their shadows. Playing with color here, I work to maintain the necessary values to push and pull objects into the background and foreground while introducing colors that sparkle within the rocks.

Giverny Wallflowers

These flowers were blooming at the base of a step of stairs leaving Monet's house's kitchen. Wallflowers are an old-fashioned flower that you don't find often, and seeing them there made a connection for me...Monet worked to create beauty. He must have weeded, pruned, pulled out random starters, and planned color combinations for his flower beds. I do the same thing...with my garden and my art.

Balance 2

The yellow and purple in this painting swirl around each other, touch but remain separate. This is a charka painting. The powerful, self-confident yellows blend and react to the spiritual purples. The chakra color usually indicates the current emotional, spiritual, and physical state of a human being, therefore, they are vital to the human body. The chakra is comprised of the main organs and some bundles of nerves that keep flowing throughout the body. Mostly, there is a connection of colors and our body emotions. They are virtually in the form of a fluid, and if they block and stop moving, energy cannot flow in our bodies. There is an intimate connection between the spirit, soul, the mind, and the whole body. https://www.colorpsychology.org/chakra-colors/

Legend has it that the seeds came here during the Revolutionary War mixed with crop seeds or fodder.
